Judo in the time of Covid-19: Yeldos Smetov
Yeldos Smetov is the second and last World Champion of Kazakhstan so far. In 2015 he won the world title in an all Kazakh final. Smetov took bronze last year at the worlds and still in the race for the Olympic gold medal, in fact he is determined to grab it and quit his judo career at his highlight. JudoCrazy’s Oon Yeoh asked Smetov about his ambition, his rivals and pride.

Koreans dominate Asian Open in Hong Kong with seven gold
Korea was the best nation at the Asian Open in Hong Kong of this weekend. Korea captured seven gold medals. Mongolia and Chinese Taipei both took two gold medals. Korea claimed three of the four men’s titles on Sunday. On Saturday though it was Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Russia that won gold. Interesting was that U73kg category with winner Makhmadbek Makhmadbekov.

Kyrgyzbayev offers Kazakhstan the alternative
World number 11 Gusman Kyrgyzbayev of Kazakhstan struck Grand Slam gold for the first time in his career as he won the first men’s final at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. The Kazakh finds himself behind teammate and former world champion Yeldos Smetov on the IJF World Ranking List with the latter holding fourth place. Kyrgyzbayev took top spot with the narrowest of wins over world number 19 Walide Khyar (FRA) by way of a waza-ari score from a ko-soto-gake.

New world champion in the make at U60kg worlds
We are going to get a new World Champion U60kg! Naohisa Takato lost his battle with Uzbek Sharafuddin Lutfillaev who reached the semi final against Gusman Kyrgyzbaev of Kazakhstan. The tournament so far has been spectacular with Yang Yung Wei as the sensation who gave the event taste with a win over world championships runner-up Robert Mshvidobadze (RUS) in his first contest.
