Lightweight Davud Mammadsoy surprises in Tel Aviv
In the lightweight category at the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv Azerbaijan and Georgia brought a classic judo rivalry and in the final judo fans saw much of the creative judo we would expect from such a battle. Davud Mammadsoy (AZE) took the lead inside the first minute, with a sacrifice throw, but that wasn’t the end of the action.

Judo qualification Grand Prix in Baku for Paralympic athletes
A Grand Prix in Azerbaijan will constitute a return to judo and serve as a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) says. Competition is due to be held in Baku on May 24 and 25. Baku has been host of the Grand Prix for a number of years and for the last time in 2019. Paralympic Judo has always been stimulated by the Azeri government and Baku was also host of the 2015 European Games including a Paralympic Judo programme.

Sabina Giliazova wins her first Grand Prix
Russian lightweight Sabina Giliazova opened the Grand Prix inTashkent in the final for the Russian team against Leyla Aliyeva of Azerbaijan. Less than a minute was needed for the Russian to win her first gold medal in a Grand Prix.

Azerbaijan to the Worlds without Orkhan Safarov
With 18 medals for Azerbaijan in the history of this young country is strong in judo. The men dominate with fifteen medals and one world title for Elkhan Mammadov, the current head coach of the men’s team. Last year in Baku the team won two medals, in 2017 a best ever with four medals including two finals for Rustam Orujov and Orkhan Safarov, the man who is missing in this edition in Tokyo at the end of this month.

Azerbaijan wins IBSA mixed team title
Azerbaijan impressed on the final day of action at the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) European Championships in Genoa, Italy, winning the first-ever mixed team title. Khanim Huseynova, Huseyn Rahimli, Dursadaf Karimova, Ilham Zakiyev, Sabina Adullayeva and Bayram Mustafayev were crowned champions after defeating an IBSA team from various countries.

Former world champion Nemanja Majdov beats Azerbaijan’s Mehdiyev
Former world champion Nemanja Majdov of Serbia won his first Grand Slam title as he ended Azerbaijan’s hopes of gold in the U90kg category. The 2017 world title winner narrowly defeated Düsseldorf Grand Slam gold medallist Mammadali Mehdiyev (AZE) by a waza-ari score to end his wait for gold on the Grand Slam stage and doubled his head-to-head advantage over his rival to 2-0.
