Chelsie Giles gives British Judo medal fever
A surprising category U52kg on Thursday in Tel Aviv as three of the top 4 seeds didn’t make it to the final block. That is enough of a surprise in itself, but the real shock was watching Great Britain’s unseeded Chelsie Giles threw the Olympic champion, Kelmendi (KOS) for ippon in the semi-final. Both athletes were clearly in disbelief but only one had a smile.

Alice Schlesinger ends 15 years top judo career
Alice Schlesinger has announced her retirement from judo after a career that has seen her compete on the international stage for over 15 years. Born and raised in Herzliya, Israel, Alice competed for her country of birth until 2014, before switching to compete for Great Britain, the nationality of her mother.

Katharina Haecker takes the honours for Australia
If the first day of competition had been dominated by Japan and Korea with two gold medals each, this second day was marked by the domination of European countries (Gold medal for Great Britain, Italy and Russia) while the Australian anthem also resounded in the stadium with the magnificent victory of Katharina Haecker who won the first ever IJF World Tour title for her country.

Nekoda Smithe-Davis secures gold with emphatic victory
Two-time world medallist Nekoda Smythe-Davis of Great Britain stormed past Grand Slam debutant Ketelyn Nascimento (BRA) in the U57kg final to win Grand Slam gold for the second time in her flourishing career. Londoner Smythe-Davis, who won the Düsseldorf Grand Slam last year, got stronger as the contest went on and pulled away from her new opponent in golden score with a thunderous o-soto-gari for ippon after two minutes of additional time.

Gemma Howell keeps growing with gold in Budapest
Gemma Howell of Great Britain bested two-time world medallist Maria Bernabeu (ESP) to win her first IJF World Judo Tour title. Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist Howell has now put pressure on her U70kg teammate and Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway (GBR) in the race for the one place for Tokyo 2020, after throwing powerful Spaniard Bernabeu for a waza-ari and then pinning her with a sankaku-gatame to clinch gold.
