Ryuju Nagayama finally crowned as best lightweight in the world
A France–Japan final is always a possibility in the lightest men’s weight category when the world’s best are assembled, and in Budapest, with the top eight athletes present in full force at -60 kg, the expectation was high. Luke Mkheidze of France, an Olympic medallist and consistent performer, came in as one of the favourites—but it was not he who reached the final. Instead, it was his compatriot Cedric Revol Valadier-Picard who stole the spotlight with an electric run through the preliminaries, setting up a thrilling final against Japan’s Ryuju Nagayama.

Mondiaux de judo. Romain Valadier-Picard médaillé d’argent chez les moins de 60 kg
Le jeune Français Romain Valadier-Picard, 22 ans, a conquis une superbe médaille d’argent, vendredi 13 juin, aux Championnats du monde organisés à Budapest. Il s’est incliné en finale face au champion olympique japonais Ryuju Nagayama.

Mikhail Igolnikov captures seventh Grand Slam gold
In the final for men U90kg Egor Malkin (IJF) and Mikhail Igolnikov (IJF) fought hard for the gold medal but Igolnikov, 6 times a grand slam winner, looked the stronger of the two from the outset and proved it with a counter for a yuko inside the first minute. Malkin certainly attacked but Igolnikov was ready for each one and never looked perturbed at all. With 11 seconds left on the clock, he countered yet again and scored a waza-ari which he then added to by holding Malkin down for the required time to increase his score to ippon. With seven Grand Slam wins he is among nine elite players who won seven or more. Topscorers are Ryuju Nagayama and Hifumi Abe, both 12 Grand Slam victories.

Ryuju Nagayama Wins his 12th Grand Slam Gold Medal
There was a great risk that the Japanese judoka would dominate the category U60kg and this was actually the case, since the two Japanese representatives reached the final. The first of them was Ryuju Nagayama, bronze medallist in Paris last summer, who qualified at the expense of Dilshot Khalmatov (UKR) whose last significant result was a bronze medal at the Linz Grand Prix in 2024.

Francisco Garrigos and Luka Mkheidze convince U60kg
The men’s U60kg category on the first day of the Olympic Games saw a series of surprising and intense matches, filled with unexpected wins and dramatic finishes. Francisco Garrigos and Luka Mkheidze are on course of the final with convincing judo so far. Salih Yildiz of Turkiye was the major surprise with his quarter final victory over world champion Sardalashvili who will still have his spot in the repechage just like Nagayama who passed out and we just hope for him that he can continue and not be out of competition.
