Golf in 12th; Play Suspended At NCAA Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (seminoles.com) – Freshman Frida Kinhult is in a tie for 11th place in the individual standings, and the Seminole Women’s Golf team is in 12th place in the team standings as stroke play in the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship Finals at the Blessings Golf Club comes to a close. Following a nearly two-hour rain delay, the final round of stroke play was suspended due to darkness on Monday and will be completed Tuesday morning. The top eight teams after 54 holes of stroke play will advance to the match play portion of the tournament later on Tuesday. Florida State, which played in the morning wave of teams, has completed its third round and is currently in 12th place in the team standings. The Seminoles are 10 strokes out of eighth place with three teams ahead of them in the team standings. The eight teams currently above the cutline are Texas (first place), Duke (second), Southern California (third), Arkansas (fourth), Wake Forest (fifth), Arizona (sixth), Stanford (seventh) and Auburn (eighth). Illinois is the first team below the cutline and three strokes behind Auburn. Each of the five Seminoles in the event and the final team standings will be determined following the completion of the third round. Florida State’s finish in the team standings marks the second consecutive top-12 finish and the seventh time in school history the Seminoles have finished in the top-15 of the team standings in the NCAA Championship Finals. In addition to becoming just the eighth player in school history to finish in the top-20 of the individual standings, Kinhult finished her freshman season with a 70.66 stroke average – a stroke average which sets new Florida State records for a single season and for a career. She bettered the former single season record of Morgane Metraux (71.69 in 201) and the career record of Matilda Castren (72.52, 2014-17). Freshman Beatrice Wallin’s 72.77 stroke average at the end of the season is now the third best career scoring average in school history. Florida State Head Coach Amy Bond has now coached four players in the last three seasons (Morgane Metraux in 2016; Kim and Morgane Metraux in 2018 and Kinhult in 2019) who have finished in the top-20 of the individual standings of the NCAA Championships. Prior to Bond’s arrival as the Seminoles’ Head Coach for the 2011 season, a total of four players in school history had finished in the top 20 of the individual standings at the NCAA Championship. "We had the youngest team at the championship and finished in the top 12,” said Bond. “The girls all battled hard but it just didn't happen this week. It was a great learning experience for all of our players, and I am extremely proud of each of them. This was a great year and I look forward to getting back to work in August.” Kinhult finished play in the championship with her second consecutive even par score and a three round total of 4 over par 223. She totaled four birdies and 15 holes scored a par or better. Kinhult was nearly flawless on her back nine with eight holes scored at par with one birdie – she was one stroke under par on her final five holes of the round. Kinhult challenged the Seminoles’ all-time scoring mark from her first tournament as a Seminole when she carded a 68 in the second round of the Cougar Classic on the second day of the season. She totaled 12 rounds scored in the 60’s, led the Seminoles on the leaderboard in seven of the 10 events she played in and was named the ACC Player (Co) and Freshman of the Year. “A season is always special when it’s connected to history,” said Kinhult. “My teammates and our coaches made it even more fun because they have helped me enjoy this year so much. There have been lots of great rounds in my first season but I also know I can improve a lot. It’s great to set records, but I’ll do everything to make it even lower next season. Kinhult is a finalist for the ANNIKA Award as well as the Player and Freshman of the Year awards by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. Wallin carded a 76 in the third round and finished her first NCAA Championship Finals appearance with a 10 over par total of 229. Her score on Monday included an eagle on Hole No. 7 – her team-leading third eagle of the season. Wallin also carded four birdies for the second consecutive round as she finished her final two rounds a three strokes over par. She was one of only 12 players in the 132-golfer field who carded at least one eagle during three rounds of stroke play at the 2019 NCAA Championship Finals. Wallin finished her freshman year with a 72.77 stroke average – the ninth lowest single-season average in school history. Her stroke average ranks as the third lowest for a career in school history. Florida State finished the 2019 season with two tournament championships (at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Evans Derby Experience), a second place finish at the ACC Championship (for the third consecutive season) and a second place finish at the NCAA Auburn Regional Championship (for the second consecutive season).

Golf Begins Play At Auburn Regional Monday
Round 1 Pairings / 2018-19 Women's Golf Statistics / OPELIKA, Ala. (Seminoles.com) – If the Kentucky Derby is considered to the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”, then the four NCAA Women’s Golf Regional Championships that will be contested this week must certainly be considered to be the “Most Exciting 54 Holes in Women’s College Golf.” The 11th ranked Florida State Women’s Golf team begins its quest for the first NCAA Championship in school history on Monday at the NCAA Auburn Regional at the Saugahatchee Country Club. As the No. 3 seed in the 18-team regional, the Seminoles need to finish among the top six teams after three days of play to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals in May. “Playing in regionals is absolutely one of our goals each year,” said Seminole Head Coach Amy Bond. “It’s where the NCAA Championship begins, and unfortunately, ends for some teams. That’s what makes it exciting. It’s also what makes it a very nerve-wracking three days of golf.” Bond’s Seminoles, who have been ranked in the nation’s top-15 during the majority of the season, have certainly earned their national status. The have played one of the nation’s toughest schedules, have two team titles (at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Evans Derby Experience), finished second in the ACC Championship for the third consecutive season and field one of the top lineups in all of college golf. The Seminoles win at the Evans Derby Experience in March on the Saugahatchee Country Club course came as they shot a tournament low team score in the final round to catapult themselves into first place on the final day of play. Florida State had two players finish in the top three and three players finish in the top 12 of the individual standings in gaining the 11th team win of Bond’s head coaching career in Tallahassee. “Our familiarity of this course is certainly going to help us when play in the regional begins on Monday,” said Bond. “But there are four other teams in this regional (Duke, Auburn, Clemson and Alabama) who also played in the Evans Derby and the probability of every team in this regional putting up low scores is high. We are certainly going to have to play our best over three days to advance.” In addition to the Seminoles’ familiarity with the course, Bond is also comforted in knowing that she brings one of Florida State’s strongest lineups into the regional championship. Florida State’s lineup – Junior Amanda Doherty along with freshmen Frida Kinhult, Puk Lyng Thomsen, Beatrice Wallin and Amelia Williamson – is one of the strongest in school history. Doherty will play her third career NCAA Regional Championship and the Seminoles’ freshman class is statistically the best in the nation. Doherty is currently ranked second in school history with a career stroke average of 73.13. She has earned a pair of top-15 individual finishes in her first two regional appearances including a tied for fourth place finish in the 2018 NCAA Tallahassee Regional. Doherty finished with a 3 over par score of 219 and in a tie for 12th place in the individual standings at the Evans Derby Experience in March. Florida State is one of handful of teams in the nation with four freshmen in its lineup. Kinhult, with a 69.96 stroke average, is challenging the Seminoles’ all-time single-season and career scoring averages, was named the ACC Golfer and Freshman of the Year. Kinhult and Wallin are only the third of fourth freshmen in school history to earn All-ACC honors while Thomsen and Williamson both finish in the top-20 of the individual standings at the ACC Championship. The individual members of the Seminoles’ standout freshman class have an average single round score of 72.91 – less than one stroke over par. “This group is finished at 2 under par in winning the Evans Derby Experience on this course,” said Bond. “Frida and Beatrice finished in a tie for third; Amanda finished tied for 12th, Puk carded a 71 in the first round and Amelia played her best golf over her final 18 holes.” In regional play Bond knows things can change in an instant. “Every team in this regional is really good” said Bond who has guided each of her nine teams at Florida State into NCAA Regional Championship play. “I’m very confident in this group of players, and they are very confident in themselves. They should be. They have all done everything we have asked of them. They have worked hard every day they have come to the course. They have practiced with a purpose. They have prepared themselves to play in the postseason.” After a practice round on Sunday, the Seminoles begin regional championship play at 9:00 a.m. (EDT) Monday from hole No. 1. As the No. 3 seed, the Seminoles will play with top-seeded Duke and second-seeded Vanderbilt. The Seminoles have advanced out the of the NCAA Regional Championships into the NCAA Championship Finals in each of the last three seasons and will look to do so again this week. “We have to be at our best for 54 holes if we want to advance to nationals,” said Bond. “That’s what makes this such an exciting event. Every team here is good. To advance, you have to be good for 54 holes. “I know this team is ready to do that.”

(Seminoles.com) – The Florida State women’s golf team has finished in second place in the ACC Women’s Golf Championship in both of the last two seasons. In 2017, the Seminoles finished second to Duke by nine strokes. In 2018, they finished behind the Blue Devils, again. Florida State Head Coach Amy Bond and her Seminoles arrive at Sedgefield Country Club for the 2019 ACC Championship looking to put an end to Duke’s reign and win their first-ever ACC Championship this weekend. The Seminoles enter the two day-day (Thursday and Saturday), 54-hole tournament as the third-highest ranked team in the conference (behind Duke and Wake Forest) but as the team with the best stroke average. Florida State will play in the event for the 28th time and has finished in third place or better in three of the last four seasons. The Seminoles have finished as high as second (1992, 1995, 1999, 2017 and 2018) and have earned four third-place finishes since joining the nation's top conference for women’s golf in 1992. “I think the biggest thing is that we have worked really hard at getting better each and every day we’ve come out here,” said Bond. “Now it’s the postseason and you really just treat it as any other day. It’s still 54 holes, and they’ve got to go out and play the golf course instead of other people. I’m really excited to see them compete with the best teams in the ACC and see how we compare as we head to the big part of the postseason.” The event returns to Sedgefield for the first time since 2016, but it’s a course Bond knows well. In her nine seasons as the Seminoles’ head coach, the ACC Championship has been played at Sedgefield seven times. During that period (2011-16), the Seminoles finished in the top four a total of four times and earned a tie for a third-place finish in 2015. “I think I am the only one, including Matt (Whall, Florida State’s assistant coach) who is going with us this week, that has seen the golf course,” said Bond. “Amanda (Doherty) hasn’t played it, and of course, the four freshmen haven’t played it either.” The Seminoles’ lineup will feature Doherty (a 2018 All-ACC selection) along with four seasoned freshmen (Frida Kinhult, Puk Lyng Thomsen, Beatrice Wallin and Amelia Williamson), a lineup that has carried Florida State to two team championships this spring. The Seminoles won the power-packed Darius Rucker Intercollegiate by a record margin (with Kinhult winning the individual championship) and roared back from fourth place entering the final round to win the Evans Derby Experience (with Kinhult and Wallin both finishing in a tie for third place in the individual race). Florida State’s lineup may very well be the most talented Bond has ever brought to an ACC Championship, despite the major contributions from four players who have yet to tee off in a conference championship. Playing with these four freshmen is something Bond is not worried about. “One of the things I like about this team is they play hard golf courses really well,” said Bond. “If they can keep that in perspective and make a lot of pars, I think Saturday we will be in good shape.” Kinhult, the No. 1-ranked freshman and the No. 2-ranked collegiate player in the country, is also unfazed by her first appearance in the ACC Championship, which is generally considered to be the best collegiate conference tournament in the nation. “I’m very excited to go into the postseason starting with the ACC,” said Kinhult. “Coach told me some holes are going to be long and I’m excited for that. I like when a course is a bit tough – it’s the game from the tee to the greens – that’s what I like. I’m excited to get there and play the course.” Kinhult enters the 2019 ACC Championship as the conference leader with a 69.65 stroke average in 20 rounds during seven events. She is the only ACC golfer with a stroke average below 70 and has carded more than half of her rounds (11 of 20) in the 60s. Kinhult’s score of 7-under par 65 is tied for the best round vs. par in the ACC this year. Kinhult enters the ACC Championship an incredible 35 strokes under par in seven tournaments as a Seminole. This year has been exciting,” said Kinhult. “I tried not to have too many expectations coming in, but it’s been great. I have finished all top-10s with two wins which is good. I’m just trying to do my best and improve all of the time.” The gravity of the tournament is certainly not lost on Doherty, who will play in her third career ACC Tournament. She finished in a tie for fifth place with a spectacular round of 67 in the second round in helping the Seminoles to a runner-up finish a year ago. “I’m excited to play Sedgefield,” said Doherty. “None of us – and very few of the players on the other teams – has seen it so it will be very interesting to see how it plays. It’s a nice course. I feel really good going into ACCs with my game personally and I think everybody else is feeling pretty good, also. We have played a lot of these teams that we’ll see and played well against them, so I think it will be a fun week.” Doherty, a junior, also has complete confidence in her teammates despite their relative youth as collegians. “I think they’re prepared. They are all good golfers. They know what they are doing. I think they are prepared. I think everybody is prepared.” Bond, too, has confidence in her entire squad. “Sedgefield is going to present a challenge both with the weather and with the course itself, but I think it will be fun,” said Bond, who led the Seminoles to a second-place finish as player in the 1999 ACC Championship. Play gets underway Thursday morning for the Seminoles at 8:30 a.m. The teams will play 36 holes on Thursday and complete the tournament with 18 holes on Saturday.
