Golf In 15th Place at NCAA Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Frida Kinhult is in a tie for 19th place in the individual standings, and the Seminoles are in 15th place in the team standings heading into the third round of stroke play at the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships at the Blessings Golf Club. The Seminoles completed play in the rain-delayed second round on Sunday. The stroke play portion of the event has been shortened to three rounds because of the rain disruption during Saturday’s second round. The Seminoles must make up at least 12 strokes in the final round of stroke play to finish in the top eight of the team standings and advance to match play which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The weather forced the NCAA Golf Committee to shorten the stoke play portion of the event from 72 holes to 54 holes. No. 3 ranked Duke is in first place in the team standings with a two-round total of 586. The Blue Devils hold a nine-stroke lead over No. 1 ranked Southern California and a 10 stroke lead over No. 2 ranked Texas. Sierra Brooks of Florida carded a 6 under par score of 67 in the second round and assumed the individual lead with a two-round total of 142. The individual championship will be crowned at the conclusion of stroke play on Monday. “The more we play this course the more comfortable we are getting,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “Tomorrow is the day to go. We are going to make the most of tomorrow; we are confident in ourselves and I look for us to play well. We improved by 23 shots from the first day, handled the rain delay and we are due for a good day on Monday.” Florida State was led in the second round by three players – Frida Kinhult, Amanda Doherty and Beatrice Wallin – who all carded scores of 73. Kinhult, who is a candidate for National Player of the Year honors by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association and the ANNIKA Award, moved into the top-20 of the individual standings with a two-round total of 150. In the second round, Kinhult carded three birdies and 15 holes at par or better. Kinhult was never above par and was as many as two strokes under par during the round. Doherty, who is playing in her third career NCAA Championship, totaled four birdies on her way to a score of 73 on the par 73 course set-up at the Blessings. She was never above par as she played her front nine at one under par with two birdies and her back nine at one over par with two birdies and six holes played at par. Wallin, who is playing in her first NCAA Tournament championship, played her best golf of the round on her back nine with three birdies and seven holes played at par or better. She birdied her second hole of the round to go under par and was a total of two strokes under par on her final six holes of the round. Florida State will play with Illinois and Florida in the final round of stroke play as it looks to qualify for the match play portion of the championship for the first time in school history. The trio of teams will tee of beginning at 10:06 ET. The Seminoles finished in a tie for 12th place in the team standings of the 2018 NCAA Championship Finals – the second best finals finish in school history. As academic grades for the University were released late last week, Bond’s Seminoles’ continued to shine in the class room as well as on the course. The five Seminoles competing in the NCAA Championship finals (Doherty, Kinhult, Thomsen, Wallin and Williamson) combined for a cumulative grade point average of 3.654. Doherty earned Dean’s List honors for the second time in her career. She has earned either President’s List or Dean’s List honors in each of the first six semesters of her academic career at Florida State.
