Finally European gold for Ilia Sulamandize
The final of the European Championships U100kg brought an electrifying head-to-head between Zelym Kotsoiev of Azerbaijan and Ilia Sulamanidze of Georgia. These two always deliver thrilling performances, and Saturday’s showdown in Podgorica was no exception. The crowd erupted as Sulamanidze used spectacular ashi-waza to throw Kotsoiev, though the overspin limited the score to a yuko. What an incredible day for the eight judokas on the podium. There were seven smiling faces, but the final was hard to digest for Ilia Sulamanidze, who lost his lead in the last half-minute. This led to the Hungarian referee giving him two shidos, allowing Zelym Kotsoiev to secure Azerbaijan's second gold medal of the week. After Hidayat Heydarov's victory in the -73kg category, Kotsoiev added to his world title with Olympic gold, marking Azerbaijan's third-ever Olympic judo gold.

Zelym Kotsoiev World and Olympic Champion, Sulamanidze forgets to win
The men's U100kg final at the Paris 2024 Olympics was a technically, tactically, and emotionally charged match between Ilia Sulamanidze of Georgia and Zelym Kotsoiev of Azerbaijan. From the start, Sulamanidze appeared to be the more dangerous competitor, finding ways to unbalance world champion Kotsoiev with relative ease. Sulamanidze scored the first waza-ari and shifted to a defensive strategy to maintain his lead.

Ilia Sulamanidze (GEO) remains number one U100kg
Georgia remains the hot topic as we move up to the next category. Ilia Sulamanidze leads the pack and at only 22 it's an incredible feat to be in such a position, among the heavier men of the judo world. The junior world champion won the 2022 World Judo Masters and also carries with him two junior continental titles and two u23 continental golds. The trajectory is out of this world but the Olympic Games is never played out in a straight line and Sulamanidze’s podium place is certainly not assured.
