First back-to-back gold for Japan after Sanshiro Murao grabs title
In a tense and technically measured all-Japanese final at the 2025 World Judo Championships in Budapest, Sanshiro Murao finally realized his long-held dream by becoming the world champion in the men’s -90kg category. The clash between Murao, the 2024 Olympic silver medallist, and Goki Tajima, the reigning world champion, was expected to be a high-level affair, and it lived up to that billing, even if it ended without a single score on the board.

Sanshiro Murao wins seventh Grand Slam in six cities
The final therefore opposed Sanshiro Murao and Marcelo Fronckowiak (BRA). A little passive while he was observing his opponent, Murao was penalised with a first shido. Sanshiro Murao again sensational in Tokyo Grand Slam
The final in Tokyo U90kg promised to be thrilling. It must be said that Sanshiro Murao once again demonstrated his immense technique: uchi-mata in 14 seconds in the first round, o-soto-gari in 1 minute 19 in the second. In the semi-final, things were more complicated, since it took Murao 9 minutes 48 to overcome his compatriot Goki Tajima. On his side, Maisuradze won a tactical victory in the first round, before pinning his opponent in the second. In the semi-final, the Georgian judoka won in golden score by a waza-ari.

Sanshiro Murao strikes again with gold
Sanshiro Murao is in excellent shape and in the final, would give Vugar Talibov (AZE) a serious reason not to bank on those 1000 points. However, Talibov wasn't willing to go down without a fight regardless of ranking or probability and he countered Murao's first tani-otoshi attempt for waza-ari. Murao then opened up and showed everyone what high level judo should look like. He attacked with o-uchi-gari, osoto-gari several times and outgripped the Azeri in a whole different way. To be down by a score and produce such a change in gears is absolutely world class.

Sanshiro Murao won his third IJF gold medal
Japan’s Sanshiro Murao is growing from strength to strength, with his second Grand Slam win of the year (and third overall, in his career). Murao’s favorite technique is osoto-gari but in his first match, against Remi Feuillet (MRI), he used uchimata for ippon.

Sanshiro Murao is still an asset for Japan at the worlds
The final U90kg of the Grand Slam in Budapest was between Christian Parlati and Sanshiro Murao. Murao continued his triumphant series playing his great melody, winning gold by eliminating Parlati in a final that we expected much more from. It was the sixth title for Japan in Hungary.
