Triple gold for Azerbaijan at opening day of Cadet Europeans in Skopje
Just like in 2023, Azerbaijan wins three gold medals in the boys' under-18 category at the European Cadet Championships in Skopje, Macedonia. A repeat of a unique trilogy. In 2016, Azerbaijan won gold in two weight classes. Russia has won three gold medals in one day before, albeit on the last day of the boys' competition in 2013, with Mikhail Igolnikov, now an experienced judoka, among others. Today, three young Azeris showed that they have a promising future ahead of them.

Mikhail Igolnikov captures seventh Grand Slam gold
In the final for men U90kg Egor Malkin (IJF) and Mikhail Igolnikov (IJF) fought hard for the gold medal but Igolnikov, 6 times a grand slam winner, looked the stronger of the two from the outset and proved it with a counter for a yuko inside the first minute. Malkin certainly attacked but Igolnikov was ready for each one and never looked perturbed at all. With 11 seconds left on the clock, he countered yet again and scored a waza-ari which he then added to by holding Malkin down for the required time to increase his score to ippon. With seven Grand Slam wins he is among nine elite players who won seven or more. Topscorers are Ryuju Nagayama and Hifumi Abe, both 12 Grand Slam victories.

Mikhail Igolnikov proves to be an ace for the Games
Mikhail Igolnikov (AIN) has won the Grand Slam in Baku. The winner in Ulaanbaatar last June, started with a bye, followed by victories against Theodoros Tselidis (GRE) and Thomas Scharfetter (AUT), before defeating Mihael Zgank (TUR) in the semi-final. In the final he was opposed to Ivaylo Ivanov.

Mikhail Igolnikov defends gold in Mongolia
After a victory in the first round, it was Mikhail Igolnikov (AIN) who made the best impression at the bottom of the draw. He then benefitted from the absence of former world champion, Nemanja Majdov (SRB), before winning against the 2021 junior world champion, Peter Safrany (HUN). In the semi-finals, Igolnikov beat Komronshokh Ustopiryon (TJK). After a tactical contest and three penalties given to Erlan Sherov (KGZ), Igolnikov won the gold medal.

Mikhail Igolnikov contributes to five gold medals for Russian athletes
In the final U90kg of the Grand Slam in Ulaanbaatar Mikhail Igolnikov stunned Davlat Bobonov with a hip move that earned waza-ari. He is an uncomfortable judoka because he analyses his opponents very well and always has the right tactics to nullify them. A few seconds later, he executed a splendid ochi-gari to win a well-deserved gold.
