European Championships Podgorica preview day three women U70kg
The U70kg category is a division in transition and transformation. The third day promises fireworks, with rising stars, returning champions, and medal-hungry veterans all in the mix. One of the biggest new threats is Hungary’s Szofi Ozbas, who made a successful transition from -63kg in 2024 and immediately claimed back-to-back Grand Slam golds in Baku and Tbilisi. On her way, she defeated European and Olympic medallists, including Sanne Van Dijke, and looks poised to shake up the bracket.

Szofi Ozbas catches back to back victory in new weight category
Szofi Ozbas had 21 attempts in the category U63kg to win a World Tour gold medal and it didn’t happen. She switched to the category U70kg and won a Grand Slam at her first attempt and today added another great medal defeating the former world number one Sanne van Dijke. Two Olympic medallists went head to head in an interesting battle in the final of the Grand Slam in Tbilisi.

Barbara Matic already on Olympic form
The final for women U70kg at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi Sanne van Dijke and Barbara Matic looked to be fairly even at the beginning but the Croatian double world champion had a look of total commitment and enjoyment on her face and she rolled underneath the Dutch number 1 with a seoi-otoshi for ippon to take the gold. She almost made it look easy, almost.

World number one Sanne Van Dijke preparing for the climax
Always strong and usually leaves events with results, Dutch entry Sanne van Dijke at U70kg has an impressive record and one that points to a consistently high level for many years. She won her first grand slam medal in Germany in 2015 and she was only a teenager, just off the back of becoming junior European champion. Almost a decade has passed and she’s still reliable and powerful and collects medals with a refusal to ever give up on her goals.

Van Dijke new number one U70kg
The recent Tokyo Grand Slam has left an indelible mark on the IJF World Ranking, resulting in intriguing shifts and affirmations in various weight categories. In the U70kg weight division Sanne Van Dijke from the Netherlands emerges at the forefront of the U70 kg category, commanding the top position with 7243 points. Saki Niizoe of Japan secures the second place coming from the leading spot, while Elisavet Teltsidou from Greece maintains her presence in the third position.

Sanne van Dijke fourth Dutch athlete to win Grand Slam Japan
The number 1 seed at U70kg for the Tokyo Grand Slam 2023 was the Netherlands’ Sanne Van Dijke, one of the most decorated athletes on the circuit and one who already has a Masters title and 2 grand slam silver medals to her name so far this year. She had no problem converting this ranking to another medal in Tokyo, as she blasted her way through to the final. She is the fourth Dutch judoka to win the Grand Slam in Japan.
